HTC U 11 Unveiled Today! Everything We Know So Far

The wait is over! Yes, the top Taiwanese conglomerate has finally unveiled its 2017 flagship smartphone, HTC U 11, today. HTC U 11 will be the successor to the extremely popular HTC 10 series. In the recent past, HTC was overshadowed by its contemporary brands in the market for its simple look, moderate features and high-cost approach.

Earlier this year, when HTC introduced its HTC U Ultra and HTC U Play smartphones, the handsets failed to impress the buyers. Following which, the company decided to launch its high-end flagship phone to re-establish its stand in the market amid the tough fight from the counterpart brands like Samsung Galaxy S8, iPhone 7, OnePlus 5 and others. Ever since HTC broke the news, rumors mills were rife about the upcoming handset. The excitement was pumped up further after the giant mobile producer teased us with the time-to-time promotional videos of the handset, presenting a brief picture about the in-and-out of the device. However, all the speculations have been put to rest today after the official announcement of HTC U 11. Now, we finally get a concrete idea about the specifications and price of the phone.

The highly-anticipated HTC flagship has plenty of new features under its hood. The eye-candy variant of the handset will be the poppy Red HTC U 11. Though the handset could be slightly towards the upper-end, it would definitely satisfy the bid with its top-notch features.

Okay before the stylish superphone hits the market, we give you a detailed analysis of the overall specifications of HTC U 11 and things to look for in it!

Design and Display

Though HTC U 11 could be confused as the lookalike of its predecessor HTC 10, the former comes with its own flavor of newness. It is designed in a glossy metallic frame, like its previous releases HTC U Ultra and HTC U Play. The reflective glass-built rear with curved edges adds a smooth and elegant finish to the handset. Actually, the handset has thin bezels, which seem to dribble over the edges, giving it a curved look. On the back, the camera is equipped with a circular frame with the Dual flash next to it. The arrangement gives a glimpse of the HTC 10 with a similar setting. HTC U 11 comes in a 5.5 inches (~71.4% screen-to-body ratio) Super LCD 5 display with 1440 x 2560 pixels resolution. It is guarded by the latest Corning Gorilla Glass 5 and HTC Sense UI.

Processor & OS

HTC appears to be extra-cautious after the failure of its  HTC U Ultra and HTC U Play handsets in the market. It offers nothing but the best for the consumers. The global giant has tucked in all the upgraded features along with some never-seen-before specifications in the latest handset. HTC U 11 is powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 Octa-core (4x2.45 GHz Kryo & 4x1.9 GHz Kryo) chipset with GPU Adreno 540 and runs Android 7.1 (Nougat).

RAM & Internal Storage

While most of the top brands have been focusing on the RAM space in their flagship phones like OnePlus 5 with 8GB RAM, Xiaomi Mi 6 with 6GB/8GB RAM among others, HTC also ensures to match up the status with its HTC U 11. The handset is likely to come in two storage variants, which are 4 GB RAM /64 GB storage and 6 GB RAM/128 GB internal. Both are expandable up to 256 GB via MicroSD card slot.

HTC U 11 could be the perfect device for Selfie lovers with its 16 MP high-quality front camera. The device is outfitted with 12 MP rear sensor with Dual-LED (dual tone) flash and laser autofocus feature. Basically, HTC U 11 has retained its previous camera arrangements without experimenting much with it. The device wears a simple yet classy look with the rear camera, etched in a  round frame along with the flash adjacent to it towards the left. It has additional features of Optical image stabilization, Autofocus, Back-illuminated sensor (BSI), Exposure compensation, ISO control, White balance presets and Shutter speed control.

HTC has packed its upcoming flagship with a powerful 3000 mAh non-removable Li-Ion battery with Fast battery charging option (Quick Charge 3.0), which can deliver up to 24 hr and 30 mins talk time and 336 hours of service on stand-by. As compared to the other premium smartphones, which are powered by huge battery capacity of up to 5,000 mAh, HTC could have improvised a little more with the battery backup.

In terms of connectivity, HTC U 11 will support 4G VolTE network and have a reversible USB Type-C connector. It will support Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth 4.2, A2DP, LE. However, the handset will lack a 3.5mm headphone jack.

We already know that HTC U 11 will come with some significant features, which would be completely new for us. One of the quintessential element to be found in the handset is its touch-sensitive edges, which HTC calls as Edge Sense. This interesting feature lets you interact with the device through gestures like touch and voice. Recently, an HTC Edge Sense app had popped up in the Google Play App Store, affirming the 'gesture control edges' feature of the device. However, the app was pulled down from the Play Store shortly. It, however, indicated that the Edge Sense app can help in interacting with the device by scrolling the edges of the handset for navigation. It might also let you squeeze the frame of HTC U 11 and generate a response from it. It can be used in sending messages, accessing the camera or launching Google AI. As the touch-sensitive edges will be a very new feature to be seen in the HTC upcoming flagship, the Edge Sense app could be sorely dedicated towards this unique feature and provide an easy-access interface to the users. Moreover, the handset is configured in a way that users can even record audio from 360 degrees angle which is possible because of its four microphones that are positioned around the device. Sounds amazing right?

Apart from this unique sensor, HTC U 11 also has a fingerprint scanner underneath the display as there isn't any physical home button found on the front. The handset will be rugged as a rock with the IP IP67 certification, which makes it extremely water and dust resistant.

The premium shiny superphone could be a catalyst for HTC to make a powerful comeback into the market.
