Dual Camera setup is the latest craze these days. The obvious reason being the dual lens camera module not only captures beautiful pictures but also enables the camera to capture objects with special effects.
Last year Huawei introduced a monochrome sensor in its dual camera in some of its handsets. In the mean, while LG has picked up wide-angle lens as an additional feature since the LG G5. Whereas iPhone and OnePlus have opted for telephoto lenses.
Now telephoto lens works well in iPhone7 Plus, the reason is it lets you allow you to easily zoom in on an object without compromising the quality of the picture, which is actually a very common problem in smartphones.
The advantages of the telephoto lens don't end here, there are lots more to it. Apart from rendering perfect optical zoom, the telephoto lens can also be used for measuring depth when it is paired with a camera with a shorter focal length.
iPhone7 Plus features Portrait mode that simulates a shallow depth of field (also known as ‘bokeh') when clicking portrait photos.
And just like OnePlus 5 too has the telephoto lens on its primary dual cameras. It offers 1.6x optical magnification) and also uses the same method to simulate a shallow depth of field.
Now if both the handset feature a dual camera and telephoto lens, then which one is better?
OnePlus 5 roots a dual 16 megapixel camera with f/1.7 aperture plus 20 megapixels with f/2.6 aperture accompanied by 1.6x optical zoom and dual-LED flash. The selfie camera houses a 16 megapixel shooter with f/2.0 aperture.
Whereas the iPhone 7 Plus features a dual camera of 12MP (28mm, f/1.8, OIS & 56mm, f/2.8) 2x optical zoom, quad-LED (dual tone) flash. The selfie camera nestles a 7MP snapper with f/2.2 aperture.
OnePlus 5 iPhone 7 Plus
The OnePlus 5 renders a mixed performance under bright and dim light conditions. You may expect some great images with high quality but it doesn't really perform up to the mark.
Whereas iPhone 7 Plus keeps the object perfect in place by neatly blurring the background. It may not score a perfect ten but it can be said that the cameras of iPhone 7 Plus which is far better than iPhone 7 Plus. The picture quality of iPhone 7 plus speaks for itself.
In this case, you can see that OnePlus 5 performs great than in the previous scene. The picture quality is sharper with better separation between the model and background.
The iPhone 7 Plus offers higher contrast and warmer tones as compared to OnePlus 5. Here the two smartphones perform in an almost same manner especially in the aspects of separation and blur quality.
In this scene, OnePlus 5 and iPhone 7 Plus is competing for the neck to neck delivering almost similar results. The iPhone renders sharp and clear images even OnePlus does a fair job.
Here this scene has a busy foreground than the ones before it, both the smartphones display complex geometry, failing to properly blur the background visible through the opening in the chairs.
OnePlus 5 delivers vibrant and colorful pictures while iPhone 7 Plus delivers cooler colors of the photos.
One of the main important points in taking a portrait picture with a creamy background is to have a lot of space between the model and background and to have the aperture of your lens as wide open as possible.
iPhone 7 Plus does not fare well exposure and color wise in this scenario, may be due to the bright light. The iPhone photo is dull and grainy with skin tones that are extremely dark.
OnePlus 5 gives us bright and colorful pictures with fantastic looking and delivering real skin shades. The background is too much blurred but the iPhone 7 Plus captures decent images in such situations. If you closely observe both the pictures side by side then you can see the picture quality of OnePlus 5 is comparatively softer.
In this scene, both the smartphones disappoint us. The iPhone 7 Plus photo is underexposed, with a much cooler white balance, which makes it look dull and lifeless. When you look closely, it is also undesirably soft.
The OnePlus 5 does a good job in this case especially when it comes to exposure and white balance. But when we compare it to iPhone 7 Plus the images are soft and doesn't appeal to the eyes.
However, we can say that OnePlus 5 performs better in terms of all-around color representation and exposure.
Neither OnePlus 5 nor iPhone 7 Plus could copy the creamy shallow depth of field like the digital photography. Whether you click sharp but dull looking pictures over, over vibrant and well-exposed images that are is entirely up to your personal choice.
