Touted to be one of the powerful flagship phones of 2017, OnePlus 5 has already created a stir in the smartphone industry even before its release. Rumors suggest that the handset is likely to leave behind all the top-notch handsets of the year including Samsung Galaxy S8, iPhone 7, Nokia 9 and others, with its magnificent features.
Talking about the recently launched smartphone bunch, Samsung Galaxy S8 series has received maximum popularity and sale rate. Packed with high-end features and beautifully curved exterior design, Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus had recorded highest pre-order requests last month. But, the latest Galaxy S series can burn a hole in the pocket.
Now the question is should we wait for the upcoming OnePlus flagship OnePlus 5 or settle for the already available grand handset of Samsung, the Galaxy S8?
To figure that out, we will draw a detailed comparison between the two premium devices and analyze the specifications in bits. You can introspect on both and decide for yourself.
Display & Design
Samsung brought out the concept of curved edge-to-edge OLED display in their Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus with thin bezels framed in glass structure on the rear. The beautifully crafted handset comes in a wide 5.8 inches Super AMOLED touchscreen with 1440 x 2960 pixels resolution. The device doesn't have a branding or front home button. The back has a square camera focal point in the middle at the top with the unique fingerprint sensor on its right side and the glimmer module to one side. Moreover, it also houses the interesting Iris scanner feature, which can unlock the handset through face detection.
OnePlus 5 will don a wide 5.5 inches full HD display with diminished bezels in a metallic finish body. It is likely to give up the 1080 x 1920 (FHD) board and bounce to a 1440 x 2560 pixels screen. The rear has a dual-camera setup with the branding just below it. There is no fingerprint sensor on the back, which indicates that the scanner will be embedded underneath the display at the front. The Iris scanner feature seems to lack in the OnePlus device.
In terms of looks, both the phones have excellent construction quality and brilliant display.
Samsung Galaxy S8 series is chipped with Octa-core (4x2.3 GHz & 4x1.7 GHz) Samsung Exynos 8895 processor. Galaxy S8 US model was powered by Octa-core (4x2.35 GHz Kryo & 4x1.9 GHz Kryo) Qualcomm Snapdragon 835. Samsung was the first to implement the latest Snapdragon 835 processor in its US models.
OnePlus 5 is powered by Octa-core (4x2.35 GHz Kryo & 4x1.9 GHz Kryo) Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset with Adreno 540 GPU.
So both are packed with the latest Qualcomm processor, rendering powerful processing of the handsets.
Samsung Galaxy S8 series house Android 7.0 Nougat OS while OnePlus 5 will run the upgraded version of Android Beta Nougat. OnePlus 5 will house Android 7.1.1 Nougat.
RAM & Internal Storage
The two flagship phones of Samsung were launched with 4GB RAM and 64 GB internal storage expandable up to 256 GB via Micro SD card. A special variant of Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage was announced by Samsung solely for South Korea market.
On the other hand, OnePlus 5 is expected to come with a 6GB RAM and 64GB/128/256 GB internal storage. However, as per the latest tip, the 'beasty' device will be equipped with a mammoth 8GB of RAM. There is not expandable memory card slot in the device.
Samsung offered its best camera specifications in its Galaxy S8 series. The premium device is rooted with a 12 MP rear Duo Pixel rear camera with a f/1.7 aperture, 26mm phase detection, autofocus, OIS and LED flash. Samsung offers multi-outline picture handling, which implies the S8 snaps three pictures and uses all the data to make one better, more nitty gritty final picture. The secondary camera is equipped with 8MP resolution, f/1.7 aperture, and autofocus. S8 also features iris scanner to unlock the device quickly.
In terms of camera, OnePlus 5 will be outfitted with the dual rear camera setup. Based on the rumors, the rear camera will sport a 23MP sensor with phase detection autofocus and LED flash while the front will be rooted with a 16MP sensor, which will deliver high-quality performance.
OnePlus is likely to surpass the camera quality of its counterpart smartphones with the unique dual-lens setup.
Samsung Galaxy S8 comes with a standard Non-removable Li-Ion 3000mAh battery, charged via USB Type-C supporting both wireless charging and fast charging options. It claims to offer up to 20 hours talk time and 14 hours Wi-fi browsing. Galaxy S8 is equipped with a 3.5 mm headphone jack.
For OnePlus 5, the latest report suggests that the handset will be powered with a huge 4,000 mAh battery and fast charging option. However, confusion still persists over whether or not the device will have the 3.5 mm audio jack. OnePlus 5 could sport the water/dust resistance, wireless charging and USB Type-C port features.
