One of the powerful chipset manufacturers- Qualcomm just introduced a new AI engine that is capable enough to support the existing Snapdragon mobile platform. The latest AI engine can work on Snapdragon 845, 835, 821, 820 and 660 mobile platforms. Furthermore, the recent Snapdragon 845 Soc has an additional feature of on-device AI processing. Thanks to the enhanced features that offers improved privacy, advanced battery management, real-time responsiveness and enhanced reliability.
According to Gary Brotman, director of product management, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc, “On-device AI demands multiple hardware architectures, software tools, and frameworks to meet developer demand and performance thresholds for the myriad of AI-powered features and apps arriving on smartphones this year”
“The AI Engine capabilities of select Snapdragon mobile platforms have and will continue to fuel AI innovation among our OEMs and ecosystem partners, and are engineered to accelerate the development and delivery of rich, seamless and compelling features for consumers.”
The AI engine comprises a Qualcomm Hexagon Vector processor, Kryo CPU, and an Adreno GPU. It lets the on-device AI applications to run effectively and quickly. The software framework of the Snapdragon Neural processing engine makes it easy for the developers to select the optimal snapdragon core. It can even speed up the on-device AI experience. Furthermore, it supports Open Neural Network Exchange interchange format. This gives flexibility to the developers to choose from different Snapdragon platforms and operating systems.
The Qualcomm AI engine supports even the Android Neural Networks API, that was first available with Google’s Android Oreo. It gives the developers a feasibility to access multiple snapdragon platforms directly through the Android OS. This Android Neural Networks features may make its debut in Snapdragon 845. Another key component of the Qualcomm AI engine is Hexagon Neural Network library through which the developers can run AI algorithms directly on the Hexagon Vector Processor. This significantly boosts up the AI operations like convolution, pooling, and activations.
Many smartphone manufacturers like OnePlus, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Motorola, ZTE, ASUS are trying to take advantage of the new Qualcomm AI engine components. Thus trying to optimize on-device AI applications on the future mobile flagships.
