Finally, the flagship products by Samsung, the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 PLUS are out now. The Galaxy S8 series with no surprise is the best phone announced in 2017 yet. Samsung has been taking preorders from the very next day of the launch and the phone will be available for general public very soon. It has already got people excited all over the world and without waiting any further, we just reviewed the new Galaxy S8 & Galaxy S8 PLUS thoroughly and here we are with the review that will help you decide whether to go or not to go for an upgrade.
Design & Display
The phones look very much like the previous version, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 PLUS but there are some major design changes. It not only feels very comfortable to use but also and looks amazing with its outlook. The changes, however, include the fact that bezels on the top and bottom of the phone have shrunk down completely and the home button has vanished. There is also a pressure sensing mechanism under the screen that serves as a home button. Moreover, the biometric sensor has been moved to the backside beside the camera making it faster to unlock the phone and much easier to use. With shrunk bezels and no home button, the phone now has a much larger display within almost same overall dimensions. The regular Galaxy S8 offers a 5.8-inch display that is what you get in the Galaxy Note series. Interestingly, the Galaxy S8 now features a curved display that was not featured in its regular predecessor and while Galaxy S8 Plus features a 6.2-inch screen with 529 PPI resolution. However, the display screen on both S8 and S8 PLUS is super AMOLED QHD that is absolutely gorgeous!
There is a very fine line between the two models. Holding them both in your hands might not let you identify the difference because the design and curves on both the models are symmetrical and both the models fit neatly in the pocket. The resolution on the regular version, however, is slightly smaller due to small screen size which is hardly noticeable. As for safety, the phone is protected by the IP 68 that makes it water and dust resistant like its predecessor. Moreover, the top of the phone has the SIM card tray that also holds the SD card slot while the bottom has USB Type-C port this time as well as a single speaker. The much-rumoured audio jack that had been removed in the previous version is still missing at the bottom. There is a power button on right side of both the versions that opens the camera on pressing it twice. This function was previously carried out by the home button on the previous version of the phone. On the right of the phone, there are volume control keys and a dedicated button to power up Samsung’s first ever AI assistant called “Bixby”.
This refers to Samsung’s very own and first ever virtual assistant on which the company has been working on for ages. The AI is much smarter than the Siri and Cortana because Bixby not only performs various tasks but also keeps track of the user's behaviour. For example, it will keep tracking the places you visit, people you call most of the time and keep you updated about them. Moreover, using Bixby Vision, you can use your device camera to hover at things and Bixby will automatically provide you more information about it or even a link to an E-Store to buy it. This exactly was done by Amazon in its fire phone series previously but it was not a major hit since it navigated users to items available on Amazon.com specifically.
The camera, as always, will not fail to satisfy the customers this time as well. The front camera on the device features face detection and the iris scanner that is an added security option in the phone. You can now unlock your phone with the face detection or the iris scanning feature. Both the features work swift and well so this should lessen down the use of fingerprint scanner. Moreover, the heart rate sensor is still there beside the rear camera with improved response time and is able to click a selfie with you when you place your finger over it with the front camera on.
The rear camera is almost like the previous release with some program improvements. On each click, multiple photos are captured, processed and the phone gives out its best image.
The Galaxy S8 is powered by Qualcomm snapdragon 835 that is undoubtedly one of the finest chipsets available in the market and this phone is probably the first one available in markets with that CPU. Both the versions include the 4GB of RAM. However, It is expected that some variants might possess the Samsung’s Octa-core Exynos chipset. Storage options include 64 GB of internal storage that is expandable up to 256GB through the micro SD slot.
The phone is packed up with a lot of power efficient components like the QHD display and the latest Snapdragon chipset that Samsung did not really focus on increasing the size of battery that would ultimately result in bigger and bulky design. The Galaxy S8 Plus is powered by a 3500 mAH battery while the regular S8 has a 3000 mAH.
Besides regular connectivity options like WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC etc. the brand new series supports 1024 QAM and Cat .16 LTE and this means that users will be able to avail faster downloads and precisely a 20% performance boost from its predecessor.
